What’s a good free antivirus protection for Windows XP?

I just got my old Dell running after 4 years of sitting in the garage. It doesn’t have any virus protection on it and I’m wondering if someone can recommend some good free software that I can download. Thanks for any answers!

There are only two I would recommend, Avira or Avast. Avira has slightly better detection rates and also uses the least resources. Yes, I am fond of Avira, because it has proven to me to do exactly what an AV is suppose to do. You can try one and take it off and try the other. Never have two AVs in real-time at the same time.
Never use AVG free, because it does not include antirootkit and you sure do not want a rootkit on your system…
